Selecting a Continuing Care Retirement Community

 

The questions presented below are offered as a starting point for your evaluation of the facilities that you are considering. Use common sense in evaluating this type of facility. Your family member should feel comfortable in the setting. Remember, this may become your family member's future home.

Do you like how the facility looks?
Is staff helpful as you tour the facility?
Are residents engaged in activities?
Do residents seem alert and happy?
Is the facility clean and in good repair?
Are there any visible hazards?
Is the facility in a location that you like?
How far is the nearest grocery and drug store?

Activities

What activities are offered?
Are they activities you like to do?
Is there an activities staff person?
Are shopping trips regularly scheduled?
To what degree is transportation provided?
How is visiting handled for family and friends?

Services

What medical services are offered?
Do they seem adequate for your current and future needs?

What other services are offered?

Transportation

  • On demand
  • Reservation system

Laundry
Housekeeping
Library
Other

Are there fees for any of these services? If so, can they be increased in the future?

Is there an additional charge for services?

What type of facility security is offered?

Contracts

What type of contract is needed?
Will you own or rent?
Is any ownership transferable upon your death?
Is there a lump sum fee?
Is there a monthly charge?
If there is a monthly charge, what happens if you can't pay?
If you go into the hospital, will your living space be held?
Are any monthly charges fixed or can they be increased?
How is routine maintenance handled?
How is damage or non-routine maintenance handled?
Are utilities included?
Are there any other fees or charges?
Are you able to change your mind about living at the facility?
How long has the company been in business?
Will they provide references?
How are transfers made to the Assisted Living section?
What if the Assisted Living section is full when you need it?
Does your attorney have any questions for you to ask?
